A cheaper quote is not automatically better value
Put the black-box quote beside a normal policy offering the same level of cover. Look at the excess, cancellation charges, mileage rules, device requirements and what happens if your score deteriorates. If the saving is only modest, some drivers may prefer to pay a little more and avoid telematics altogether.
Where the saving really comes from
A telematics insurer is getting more information than an ordinary insurer. Instead of relying only on broad factors such as age, postcode, occupation, car and claims history, it can also see patterns in the way the car is used. For a careful driver that extra information can sometimes justify a lower price. It can also work the other way if the driving data looks riskier than the insurer expected.
